EPA seeks to reduce ship pollution on Great Lakes

(MN) Duluth News Tribune - The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday proposed new regulations on smokestack pollution from ships, demanding lower-sulfur fuel and more efficient engines from the maritime industry. East Lansing, MI - Helping Michigan communities get better equipped to meet today's challenges and providing the public with an easy-to-use tool to better understand issues around topics ranging from the New Economy to renewable energy, and urban redevelopment to ecotourism, the Land Policy Institute at Michigan State University is encouraging public dialogue with academic and other experts through Ask the Expert, a series of nine online discussion forums.

The nine moderated discussion forums cover:

The Third Thursday Dark Earth Hour

No matter what your political persuasion, the Green Party of Michigan is encouraging you to join with other Michigan residents in observing a Dark Earth Hour from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. For that one hour every month, households and businesses are asked to turn off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances.

The Third Thursday Dark Earth Hour is a reminder that we can all help buy time as we make the transition to earth-gentle, renewable energies.

The former ABC Radio Networks joins forces with SustainLane Media to create "SustainAmerica." It's being described as a multi-media, fully-integrated platform "designed to inform, educate and empower Americans to live a more sustainable lifestyle." Through PSAs, sponsor vignettes, radio show features and personality endorsements, Citadel Media's celebrity talent will encourage listeners to develop good eco-behavior. "Our company has made a significant commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and we're actively pursuing vehicles to drive our audiences toward environmentally-conscious lifestyles," says Citadel Media president Jim Robinson. "With all our on-air hosts supporting this initiative and a weekly programming reach to 110 million listeners, we expect tremendous results." Citadel Media purchases 85% of its electricity use from renewable energy sources. Citadel Media was the first and only radio network to qualify as an EPA Green Power Partner.
