Protest or protect?

Echo reader Stephanie Ariganello pointed out a typo in Thursday’s Great Links section: “Volunteers sought to protest sturgeon in Michigan – Detroit Free Press” She writes: “Those pesky sturgeon.  We ought to be having rallies against them alright, with their snotty prehistoric scutes and their smarmy shark-like fins. Whether it was a simple mis-typing or subconscious comment on someone’s part, not sure. But I believe it should be ‘protect.’” It was a simple typo, I swear. Michigan lawmakers push for green building tax breaks

Michigan lawmakers are considering bills to give tax breaks for energy efficient buildings. The requirements also considers the construction process. Raw materials must be made within 300 miles of the builiding site. And a certain percentage of discarded material must be recycled. The breaks could amount to 10 to 20 percent of the project's cost.. East Lansing, MI - Helping Michigan communities get better equipped to meet today's challenges and providing the public with an easy-to-use tool to better understand issues around topics ranging from the New Economy to renewable energy, and urban redevelopment to ecotourism, the Land Policy Institute at Michigan State University is encouraging public dialogue with academic and other experts through Ask the Expert, a series of nine online discussion forums.

Johnson Controls-SAFT plans to build a facility for the manufacture and assembly of Li-ion batteries in Holland, Michigan intended to produce up to 15 million Li-ion battery cells for automotive applications by the year 2012.

The Third Thursday Dark Earth Hour

No matter what your political persuasion, the Green Party of Michigan is encouraging you to join with other Michigan residents in observing a Dark Earth Hour from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. For that one hour every month, households and businesses are asked to turn off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances.

The Third Thursday Dark Earth Hour is a reminder that we can all help buy time as we make the transition to earth-gentle, renewable energies.

It's being described as a multi-media, fully-integrated platform "designed to inform, educate and empower Americans to live a more sustainable lifestyle." Through PSAs, sponsor vignettes, radio show features and personality endorsements, Citadel Media's celebrity talent will encourage listeners to develop good eco-behavior. "Our company has made a significant commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and we're actively pursuing vehicles to drive our audiences toward environmentally-conscious lifestyles," says Citadel Media president Jim Robinson. "With all our on-air hosts supporting this initiative and a weekly programming reach to 110 million listeners, we expect tremendous results."
